What to Do With Your Life After 50 (When You Don’t Know Where to Start)
There’s a particular kind of quiet that shows up around 50, the kind where the house is finally still, and you realize you don’t actually know what you want to do with the rest of your life.
Maybe the kids don’t need you the same way anymore. Maybe a marriage ended, or a job did, or nothing dramatic happened at all, and you just woke up one day wondering where you went.
The Side Hustle Finder Guide is for women who want to start something new and exciting in their next chapter, whilst earning money at the same time. If you’re thinking of starting a side hustle, then take a look at how this guide can help you find the perfect side hustle for you.
If you’ve been sitting with the question “what do I even want to do with my life now?” and coming up empty, I want you to know you’re in exactly the right place to start figuring it out.
I’ve asked myself this same question more times than I can count. There’s no single right answer waiting to be discovered, only a process of getting curious about yourself again.
Why This Question Feels So Hard to Answer
For most of your adult life, the answer to “what should I do” was decided for you. A job to show up to, kids to raise or a house to run. Other people’s needs filling up every available hour.
So when the noise finally quiets down, and someone asks what you want, it can feel like a foreign language. That’s not a personal failing, it’s just what happens when you spend decades being needed instead of being asked.
A few things tend to show up around this stage:
- A vague sense of restlessness with no clear cause
- Feeling like you’ve lost touch with your own preferences
- Guilt for even wanting something new when life “looks fine” on paper
- A fear that it’s too late to start over
- Grief for time that feels like it slipped by unnoticed
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone in it. This is one of the most common places I hear from women, and it’s exactly why this next step matters so much.
If you haven’t done that first bit of inner reflection yet, my post on finding purpose after 50 is a good place to start. This post picks up right where that one leaves off, once you’ve sat with the question and you’re ready to actually decide something.
Purpose Isn’t Found, It’s Decided
Here’s something that took me a long time to understand. You don’t stumble across your purpose the way you’d find a lost set of keys. You decide it, on purpose, one honest choice at a time.
This is the third step in the Becoming Her Roadmap, the framework I created as a simple 5-step identity shift process for midlife women.
The five steps are:
- Notice
- Release
- Decide
- Repeat, and
- Trust
… and this stage of figuring out what to do with your life sits squarely inside ‘Decide’.
✦ Notice is where you get honest about what’s actually going on underneath the restlessness.
🌸 Not Sure Where To Start?
The Becoming Her Roadmap is a free 5-step framework for midlife identity shift.
Show Me The Roadmap✦ Release is where you let go of the old story about who you’re supposed to be.
✦ Decide is where you choose, clearly and specifically, what comes next.
You can read through the full Roadmap here if you want the complete picture of how all five steps work together.
Thinking about purpose this way takes the pressure off. You’re not searching for some hidden destiny you’re afraid of missing. You’re simply choosing, and you’re allowed to choose more than once if the first thing doesn’t fit.
Signs You’re Ready to Decide What’s Next
You don’t need a five-year plan to start this process.
I created the Side Hustle Finder Guide for women who want to start something new and exciting in midlife, while earning some extra income too. If a side hustle has been on your mind, it’s worth taking a look to see which idea might resonate with you.
You just need a few honest signs that you’re ready to move from noticing the restlessness to actually doing something with it.
- You find yourself daydreaming about things that have nothing to do with your current routine
- Old hobbies or interests keep resurfacing in your mind
- You feel a pull toward learning something new, even if you don’t know why yet
- You’re tired of waiting for permission to want more
- Small moments of curiosity feel exciting instead of overwhelming
I remember the first time I noticed that pull in myself. It didn’t feel like clarity, it felt more like a nudge I couldn’t quite ignore anymore. That nudge is worth paying attention to.
Where to Actually Start Looking
Since purpose isn’t hiding somewhere waiting to be found, the real question becomes where to start looking within yourself.
A few places tend to hold real clues.
Your past experience is one of the richest places to start. The things you’ve lived through, the problems you’ve solved for yourself and other people, and the skills you built without even realizing it are all raw material for what comes next.
Your natural curiosity is another. Pay attention to what you find yourself reading about, asking questions about, or getting pulled toward when nobody’s watching. That pull rarely appears by accident.
And your own personality matters more than most women give it credit for. Whether you’re someone who lights up around people or someone who needs quiet, solo focus to feel like yourself, the next chapter of your life should be built around who you actually are, not who you think you should be.
What Comes Next After You Decide
Deciding what you want isn’t the finish line; it’s the starting point. Once you’ve named a direction, even a small one, the next steps are about repeating that intention until it starts to feel true and trusting yourself enough to follow through without needing outside proof first.
For some women, that next chapter stays quiet and internal, a shift in how they see themselves more than anything visible on the outside.
For others, purpose starts wanting a shape you can actually point to. Maybe that’s a creative project, or maybe it’s something closer to a small business built around something you already know how to do, a side hustle that lets you test the waters without turning your whole life upside down.
There’s no wrong shape for it to take, as long as it’s chosen on purpose instead of defaulted into.
I’m still figuring out my own next chapter too, if I’m honest. What I know for sure is that the figuring out gets easier once you stop waiting for certainty and start choosing on purpose.
This is exactly the territory I want to explore with you in this corner of the blog, the place where purpose stops being just a feeling and starts turning into something real.
If part of what’s stirring in you looks like income, independence, or finally using your wisdom for something of your own, my Side Hustle Finder Guide was built for exactly that moment.
It comes with the Local Business Starter Kit for free, and it’s designed to help you match your own strengths and experience to something that actually fits, instead of guessing.
